Eligibility

Is your business eligible to apply? 

Before you begin, please ensure your business is eligible to enter the Mornington Peninsula Business Excellence Awards. It is important that you review and complete the pre-assessment questions to ensure you are eligible to apply.

Do you hold an ABN and all relevant licences, permits and approvals required to operate the business? * Required
Is your business located in the Mornington Peninsula Shire Local Government Area? * Required
To be eligible for these awards, your registered business must be located on the Mornington Peninsula. Refer to our Ward map
Were you a registered business as at 1 July 2024? * Required
To be eligible for these awards, your business must have been operating for a minimum of 12 months

Ineligible to apply: 

  • Businesses under administration, businesses with any current planning or compliance issues, businesses in debt to Council, chain stores, franchisor or franchisees, political groups, charities, government agencies, schools, charities that have a primary focus of fundraising, own or operate electronic gaming machines (EGM) or receive funding or in-kind support from EGM venues.  Please note, businesses on payment plans with the Shire will be considered.
  • Applications/applicants that might bring Mornington Peninsula Shire’s reputation into disrepute, which is at the discretion of the Assessment Panel.
  • Organisations whose staff and/or business units are directly employed by Mornington Peninsula Shire or government agencies are not eligible to enter the Awards as an entrant. This includes Councillors. 
  • Food-related businesses scoring less than 95% on the annual food safety assessment.

Assessment Process

  • Businesses must submit their own application.  These awards are not based on a public vote.
  • Only one application per business will be accepted for consideration. Businesses should choose the category with the strongest evidence to support their application.
  • Applications will be assessed (scored) and no more than five (5) businesses per category will be shortlisted as finalists.
  • All finalists will need to undertake a judging site visit. The site visit is held to verify your written application.
  • Businesses shortlisted will be assessed by a judging panel of business and industry experts from the Small Business Mentoring Service, who will determine highly commended (if any) and the category winner.
  • To ensure confidentiality and impartiality, assessments and site visits will be carried out by the Small Business Mentoring Service and judges will need to declare any conflicts of interest prior to reviewing an application. Information contained in your application will be held in the strictest confidence according to the Shire's Privacy Policy.
  • Awards will be presented to a leading business of each size (micro, small and medium-large) in each listed category.

  • "Is your business located in the Mornington Peninsula Shire Local Government Area?" on page 1
  • "Were you a registered business as at 1 July 2024?" on page 1
  • "Do you hold an ABN and all relevant licences, permits and approvals required to operate the business?" on page 1

You have answered 'No' to a mandatory question and are ineligible to continue with this nomination.
